Herdsman/Herdswoman

Responsibilities:

• Daily care of dairy sheep, laying chickens, hogs, dairy cows, and guardian dogs
• Following best practices for Management Intensive Grazing
• Working with Farm Manager to develop grazing strategy
• Improving efficiency in existing systems
• Communication with supplemental feed suppliers
• Communication with vets, shearers, and other external service providers
• Communication with research Universities and Vet Schools for support
• Maintenance of livestock records
• Inventory and organization of tools, and veterinary equipment
• Participation in teaching for our internship program
• Interaction with farm visitors

Qualifications:

• Experience in grass-based animal husbandry
• A calm demeanor with animals
• A foundational understanding of livestock behavior
• Familiarity with humane animal handling techniques
• Basic veterinary skills
• Competence with tractor
• Competence with forklift
• A demonstrated commitment to a high level of organization
• Outstanding communication skills
• Willing to learn
• A clean driving record
• Good physical condition– can lift 50+ pounds
• Professional in appearance and behavior
• Some Spanish is preferred, but not required
